Tooth Whitening Leith Edinburgh
At KF Dental we offer two different types of whitening: an “in surgery” whitening and a “home whitening”.
The active ingredients in dental whitening products is usually either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. After the gel is applied, the active ingredient is broken down and lightens the internal pigments of your teeth, thereby improving their appearance without altering any tooth structure.
With the in surgery whitening, a strong laser is shone on the teeth to speed up the chemical reaction of the whitening product.
With the home whitening, an impression of your teeth is taken in order to create your own custom-made tray. We give you the trays, the syringes of whitening gel and application instructions. A small amount of Whitening gel is placed in the trays and the trays are then placed in your mouth. Results can be seen after 10 – 14 applications and the tray can be reused as often as desired.
Are there any side effects?
Tooth whitening is totally safe, tried and tested procedure with a long track record. The most commonly reported side effect is sensitivity which is reversible and can be managed with sensitive toothpaste.
Will the fillings and crown whiten?
The whitening treatment affects the colour of your natural teeth and will not have a whitening effect on your restorations such as fillings, crowns and denture teeth. Before the treatment, your dentist will identify any visible restorations (crowns, veneers, fillings) which may need to be changed after the whitening treatment.
How long does the whitening last?
Depending on different factors such as your diet, smoking and oral hygiene the whitening lasts on average between 18-24 months, after which the colour starts to fade back towards the original and you can have a top up.
